It isn’t. It’s something you decide, usually well before a line of code exists. That shift, from catching defects to owning what gets built, is the one that stuck with me. Since then, my work has mostly been about removing the guesswork from that stage, and about getting the right people into the conversation while it’s still cheap to change our minds.

When you’re asked to develop a new blackjack format – or rethink an existing one – where does the process start?

Honestly, it starts with a lot of watching. I’ll spend time on a table, look at how rounds are playing out, and try to understand where the format is working against the player rather than for them. Once that’s reasonably clear, the work becomes a set of constraints: what the studio can realistically do, what the maths allows, what the rules of blackjack won’t let you touch. The design happens inside those limits. It’s less inventive than it sounds. Most of the value is in framing the problem properly, because once that’s right, the range of sensible solutions is usually quite narrow.

What feedback have you received during your career that has changed the way you approach product development today?

I have a tendency to keep things open and to keep a decision reversible in case more information arrives. A colleague pointed out that this pushes the cost onto everyone waiting downstream. It was a fair hit, and it changed how I work more than any process ever has. I’m now much more willing to close something at eighty percent certainty and say plainly what we’ve assumed, rather than hold it open and call that rigour.

What is at the centre of a functional and efficient team during the development process and game release?

Everyone holding the same picture of what we’re actually shipping. That sounds obvious, but a live game release involves engineering, studio, operations, certification and the commercial side, and each of them has a slightly different idea of what ‘ready’ means. The work that pays off most is making those definitions explicit early: what must be certified, what the studio needs in place, what we’re deliberately leaving for later. Most of the release trouble I’ve seen came from a gap between assumptions rather than from a technical failure. It’s a reminder that the job is as much about people understanding each other as it is about software.

Eeze’s live casino products are built around different configurations and player experiences, from side bets and bet-behind to multi-seat play. How do you decide which additions genuinely improve the experience?

Whether it survives a full table on a Saturday night. Things that work fine in a demo behave differently when the seats are full, the round timer is tight and the dealer is moving at pace. If a feature makes the round longer for everyone, or creates a situation the dealer has to resolve manually, it will degrade the experience for every other player at that table. So I try to picture it under load early, rather than discover it after launch. That usually means asking the studio team, who know exactly how these things behave in practice.

What is your favourite part of taking a product from an idea to something players can actually use?

The day after, when nothing happens. No incidents, no confused players, no operator calls. It’s the least dramatic moment in the whole process and it’s the one I enjoy most, because a quiet launch means the difficult conversations happened months earlier, with the right people, which is exactly where they belong.

What’s been the biggest surprise about working in this industry compared with what you expected when you started?

How much of the work never shows up on screen. Players see a table and a dealer. Underneath there’s reconciliation, determinism, state recovery, thousands of edge cases that only matter in the moments they happen. I expected to spend my time on the actual player experience, and a lot of it is spent on what they’ll never notice instead. I don’t mind it, because that’s the part that earns the trust that everything else is dependent on.

Since joining the industry, has it gone in the direction you expected, or have there been particular turning points that changed the way you think about casino product development?
